Al-Hilal have dropped Brazil international Neymar from their Saudi Arabian league squad for the second half of the season after assessing the player is not at his usual level.

Neymar joined Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023 but only played five matches before suffering a serious knee injury, tearing his cruciate ligament and requiring a long break. 

The 32-year-old returned to action in two matches late last year but suffered a recurrence of the injury and has been out for a long time now. His contract with the team only runs until the end of this season.

“Neymar will not be register for the league games. He can still participate in the AFC Champions League.” 

“The Saudi league is one of the best leagues in the world. Any Al Hilal player can play for any club in Europe. I planned to have Mitrovic as the center forward with Neymar behind when I first got the job.”

“However, Neymar can no longer play at the level we used to. It’s a shame that things have become difficult for him.”

Al Hilal still has a chance to defend the league title this year after leading the league with Al Ittihad on 40 points after the first 15 matches.

Since joining in 2023, the Brazilian international has played only seven matches due to injuries, including a severe knee injury that sidelined him with an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus tear in November 2023. Over these two seasons, he has reportedly earned a total of 160 million euros.

Neymar is currently engage in preliminary talks with three MLS teams, including Chicago Fire FC, regarding a potential transfer.

At present, Inter Miami is not among the clubs vying for Neymar’s signature, and the Herons’ new coach, Javier Mascherano, recently stated that it would be “impossible” to integrate the Brazilian into Miami’s squad given the current restrictions imposed by the MLS.
